Description

Galaxy clusters can be hit or miss as imaging targets. The galaxies tend to be so far away that few, if any, details are visible so the visual interest comes from the number and distribution of the galaxies rather than the galaxies themselves. This one was somewhat sparse and the foreground stars tend to overwhelm the galaxies. I tried to tone down the stars a bit while emphasizing the color in the galaxies to help them stand out., but this is one case where the starless version might be more interesting.

Processing:

L:
DBE
BXT
GHS (GH)
SXT (unscreened star extraction)

RGB:
channel combination
graxpert
SPCC
GHS (GH, linear)
SXT (unscreened star extraction)
GHS (GH)
LRGB Combination (adding in L)
HT (using mask to reduce star halo remnant left by SXT)
NXT
MLT (mild sharpening)
Pixel math (screening in stars)

L stars:
GHS (GH)

RGB stars:
GHS (GH)
LRGB Combination (adding in l stars)
GHS (inverse GH) to tone down stars)

I did the star extraction post stretch in the hopes fewer small faint galaxies would be extracted though I'm not sure that made a difference here. I'm sure a few did (and then then ended up getting reduced when I toned down the stars) but it seemed a reasonable tradeoff to help the larger galaxies stand out.

Title: starless version

Description: This is the starless version of the image. Because of where it was produced in the workflow it still has the large star halo remnant left by SXT (though it is not bright) but it shows the galaxies better than the version with the stars.
