Description

This image contains the Bear Paw Galaxy, NGC 2537. It is a stack of twenty-seven 40-second exposures that I took on 4/17/20 using my Celestron EdgeHD 11" and ZWO ASI294MC-Pro camera.

At magnitude +11.68, the Bear Paw Galaxy lies about 22 million light-years away in the constellation Lynx. It is a small galaxy, only 13,500 light-years in diameter. Compare that to the much fainter NGC 2537A (PGC 23057) that lies to its left in my image. At magnitude +15.69 it looks much fainter and smaller, however it is a much larger galaxy 92,800 light-years in diameter, but lies much further away at a distance of 580 million light-years.

Dozens of other faint galaxies can be identified in the image, as well as well as two quasars, one of which, [VV2006] J081339.4+460341, lies at a redshift of 1.985, which corresponds to a distance of about 8.6 billion light-years. Wow! Click this link for more information and to help identify it in my image.
