Description

The Cocoon Nebula (IC 5146) in Cygnus is about 4,000 light years away. It is a stellar nursery where star-formation occurs in molecular clouds of interstellar dust.

The dark nebula, Barnard 168 is an interstellar dust lane dense enough to block the light from background stars, giving the appearance of a dark tail from the Cocoon Nebula to the top right of the picture.
