Description

This project was more of an attempt to test the limits of my backyard and more as a personal challenge. I realized early on that imaging with an 11 inch at a focal length of roughly 2000mm is not typically the ideal way of imaging this structure, but I liked the details I was getting out of the 11 inch OTA. Comprised of 6 different panels that were stitched together using the phenomenal Mosaic by Coordinates and Photometric Mosaic tools in Pixinsight.  It makes such projects very possible no matter what FOV you have as long as you are willing to put more time into collecting data on the multiple panels.

The Soul nebula is a phenomenal narrowband target, with that silky filamentous flame like structure next to LBN 673, and multiple pillars of gas and dust reaching out to the center of the Soul nebula extending from the Ha rich borders. There are multiple Bok's globules to also appreciate in the center of this cosmic star rich field. Located approximately 6000 light years away from us, it is a privilage to be able to capture this star forming cluster.

To tease out the various emissions and to create the contrast necessary for us to appreciate those differences, I chose to use the Foraxx Palette utility in Pixinsight to create the colors seen in this image, which is based off the Dynamic Narrowband Combinations, initially described by "The Coldest Nights" blog in June 2020, which I have been utilizing more and more in my narrowband images.

I think this is a data set that I will reprocess multiple times in the future as I learn more and more from the phenomenal experts of Pixinsight, and as new tools keep coming.

Thanks for looking.
