Description

Arp 273 is an interacting pair of galaxies in the constellation Andromeda, estimated to be 340 million light-years away. Halton Arp divided his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups based on purely morphological criteria. This pair of galaxies belongs to the class of binary galaxies with joined arms. The larger of the two spiral galaxies, UGC 1810, is about five times as massive as the smaller one. The smaller galaxy, UGC 1813, shows clear signs of active star formation at its core and has likely passed through the larger one recently.
