Description

This animation of the International Space Station (ISS) transiting the sun was captured from my backyard with a Canon 70D DSLR camera attached to a 6" SCT telescope protected with a homemade Baader AstroSolar Safety Film filter. While ISS solar transits for a particular location are somewhat rare, it's always flying over someone's head, and on June 7th, 2017 at precisely 16:28:10.84 PDT it was conveniently located between my house and the Sun at a distance of 355.7 miles for 0.75 seconds. It travels at an average speed of 17,227 mph and completes an earth orbit every 93 minutes. There was a crew of 5 on board at the time: 2 Americans, 2 Russians, and 1 French astronaut. Of course, that day was the only overcast day we had for weeks, but the clouds weren't quite thick enough to ruin the show.
