IC2177 - The Seagull Nebula

This is my second attempt at IC2177, the Seagull nebula. Last season's version was my first ever narrow band image and it was processed in the standard SHO pallet. This year, I wanted to re-shoot the object using my FSQ106 vs the smaller aperture FSQ85. I went for a lot more integration time in this attempt and decided to not try to combine it with last year's data set.

My goal with this image was to convey the object in a color pallet that is closer to its natural look. Gone are the mustard like yellows which are replaced with shades of red. To get the desired effect, it is not as simple as using an HOO pallet. I used all three data sets with a lot of blending in the R and G channels to take advantage of the strong Sii data set..

IC2177 is roughly 3,800 light years away between the constellations Monoceros and Canis Major. The prominent bluish arc below and right of center is a bow shock wave from the runaway star FN Canis Majoris.

Sadly, this is just about the end of my imaging season from my backyard. Most images over the next six months will be acquired with my new TOA-150 remote setup at Sierra Remote Observatories which should be online by April 1st.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
