Description

I had a few hours of clear but windy skies last night.  I captured almost 5 hours, but deleted at least a third because of bad star trails, it was a tough night to guide.

M17 is know by 5 different names, the Omega Nebula, Horseshoe Nebula, Swan Nebula, Checkmark Nebula and the Lobster Nebula.    John Herschel's 1833 drawing of M17 resembled the Greek letter Omega which also looks like a Horseshoe.  The Checkmark name comes from the center of the nebula (the bright core) that is the shape of a checkmark.  Some say if you flip image, you can see the shape of a Lobster, I do not see this.  A lastly, the Swan name come from the appearance  of a curved head and neck curving around the dark nebula in the center, I can see this.

M17 like is close neighbor M16 is a star forming region around 6,000 to 7,000 light years away.  The actual nebula is about 15 light years across, but it is surrounded by a gaseous cloud that extends 40 light years.
