Description

This is a closeup of the central part of the Heart Nebula. It shows the open cluster IC 1805 including some of its surrounding nebulosity and dark structures. I took this shot as part of an experiment to see how much detail I could get from a long focal length imaging system (1,540 mm) from a fairly light polluted location (SQM ~= 18.8). Unfortunately, I was only able to image this object for about an hour and 45 minutes so it is not as clean as I'd like it to be.  It definitely would benefit from more exposure time so I'm hopeful to be able to capture it another time.

The Heart Nebula (IC 1805) is a beautiful emission nebula, 7,500 light years away from Earth and located in the Perseus Arm of the Galaxy in the constellation Cassiopeia. It was discovered by William Herschel on 3 November 1787. It is characterized by glowing ionized hydrogen gas and dark molecular dust lanes. It is estimated to be approximately 200 light years across.
