Description

Saturn with moons one hour after sunset on Wed 18 Oct 2023.

Evening of exceptional seeing. I took advantage of a close Titan pass to record this wide-angle view of the Saturn field, running QHY at ROI of 2268x1968 over 14 minutes. 4 two-minute stacks were used for WinJUPOS derotation, just over 2,000 frames. Even with this low count (due to average fps of only 36) quite a lot of detail can be discerned on the gas giant. There is also a hint of spokes on the western side of the rings, testimony to superb conditions that night.

Titan's disk sports a characteristic orange hue, it's more than three times larger than its closest rival Rhea. The giant moon is just over half a minute away from Saturn, displaying its anti-planet hemisphere as it slides from west to east in the foreground.

In total six moons are on show, I've composited data from individual stacks for Mimas and Enceladus as WinJUPOS struggled with their low brightness.  This is an annotated view showing object ephemerides.  North up orientation centered on 8:21 pm AEDT.
