Description

About it:

Within the constellation of the Big Dipper, nestles a pretty planetary nebula, Messier 97. Discovered by Méchain in 1781, it owes its name to The Owl Nebula to Lord Rosse, who designed it in 1848.

Twenty years later Huggins determined its gaseous nature from its spectrum. The shell-shaped nebula was reportedly ejected 6,000 years ago by a central star of magnitude 16.
