Description

A rather bland looking Mars two weeks before opposition.

With the Red Planet about to make its closest approach to Earth in two years I've decided to make an exception and dust off my imaging rig.  The next four oppositions (2025, 2027, 2029, 2031) are more distant meaning a smaller disk will be on show.  Sub 30° altitude meant that I had to find a new spot for my scope, Mars is just skirting rooftops from the usual courtyard location.  In the end I had to move to a west facing back deck, it's not ideal for LX mount stability but at least I have more clearance towards the northern horizon.

La Nina is really causing havoc in our part of the world, upper atmosphere is very unstable which was evident during all captures from 1:15 to 2:15 am AEDT.  Volcano hemisphere is not known for bright albedo features which made focusing particularly challenging.  Out of 17 recordings only one proved to be worthy of further treatment, even then it is a very low contrast image with a slight hint of Olympus Mons caldera near the terminator.  North Polar Cap is quite spectacular in its extent, there's also some nice detail across Mare Cimmerium (a number of lighter areas crisscrossing it).

I'm hopeful for better seeing conditions leading up to Christmas, using the ADC to help with color dispersion due to low elevation. This view has been reduced by 75%, quality is just not there for a larger image scale.
