LDN 1251, LDN 1247 / LBN 558

LBN (Lynds Bright Nebula) 558 contains LDN (Lynds Dark Nebula) 1243, 1247 and 1251, faint molecular clouds about 1,000 light years away, in the constellation Cepheus. LDN 1251 is a star-forming region. Spectral and visible light observation of the obscuring interstellar clouds reveal energetic shocks and outflows associated with newborn stars, including the reddish glow from scattered Herbig-Haro objects

Distant galaxies are also in the image. To the left of LDN1251 is the spiral galaxy UGC 12160 (PGC 69472), approximately 84 Mly away. PGC 166755, also a spiral galaxy, is 100 Mly away and near the top of LDN 1251. And there are others

In the lower left of the image is a carbon star, a late-type star similar to a red giant whose atmosphere contains more carbon than oxygen; the two elements combine in the upper layers of the star, forming carbon monoxide, which consumes all the oxygen in the atmosphere, leaving carbon atoms free to form other carbon compounds, giving the star a sooty atmosphere and a strikingly ruby red appearance.
