Description

Located in the constellation of Cygnus, this diffuse emission nebula is approximately 5000 ly from Earth. The bright star is Sadr or Gamma Cygni, the star at the center of the Northern Cross, which marks the heart of Cygnus. Despite the name, the star and the nebula are unrelated, as Sadr is only 1800 ly distant. It is a white supergiant star with an apparent magnitude of 2,23. Sad with 12 solar mass and 150 time the Sun's radius, is 33000 time more luminous than the Sun.

The Gamma Cygni Nebula has three distinct parts, designed as IC1318 A,B and C.

The dark cloud about 20 ly thichthat divides IC1318 B and C is a dark nebula known as LDN 889.

The components IC1318 B and C are not separate parts of the nebula, but a single cloud visually separated by LND 889
