Description

The Triangulum Galaxy, M-33, is notorious for not only being a wonderful observing and imaging target, but also for harboring dozens of HII star-forming regions, most notably the monstrous NGC-604 at upper left. Since HII regions emit their own light, their gases having been ionized by nearby stars, a filter tuned to h-alpha wavelengths reveals them distinctly, as shown here. This image depicts the northeast quadrant of the galaxy as viewed from Earth. While smaller than both the Andromeda Galaxy and our own Milky Way, M-33, nevertheless, maintains the third seat in size among the members of the Local Group, and resides some 3.2 million light years away.
