Description

M104 - The Sombrero Galaxy in it natural RGB color with infrared overlay.

The Sombrero galaxy got its name because it looks like a Mexican sombrero top hat. This galaxy is located approximately 28 million light years away from Earth and can be found in our southern spring skies between constellations Virgo and Corvus . This galaxy has a very bright core, made up of thousands of globular star clusters and has a distinct outer disk made up of rich dust lanes giving this galaxy a very beautiful and unique look.

To create this image, over 22.5  hours of RGB data was collected plus an additional 4.6 hrs of infrared. I used the IR image to mask the RGB image, adjusted the colors and brightness curves to help produce an image which had a similar look to the famous Hubble telescope image.   I used a dedicated astronomy camera, the ZWO 6200mm, and for the telescope I used was a Celestron Edge11 with x0.7 reducer.  For filters, I used Astronomik RGB 2", plus the Astronomik IR pass 807nm 2".

This image was shot from my backyard here in Richmond, TX in bortle 8 light polluted skies, which was a huge challenge based on this targets altitude and our bright skies.
