Description

NGC 55 is a Magellanic type barred spiral galaxy and had been counted as part of the Sculptor group of galaxies. Recent data shows NGC55 (and NGC 300, the pair are likely gravitationally bound) are about 6 million light years away, while many galaxies in Sculptor cluster are centered around 13 million light-years away.

When I saw this data and all its inherent detail, in the imaging done by @Terry Robison, I thought it was simply amazing. It was made available through the TAIC Workshop and given that this target is not accessible to me in Canada, I could not miss out trying to process it. I hope I did Terry’s data justice.

Also, thanks to @Tim Hutchison for his inspiring version https://www.astrobin.com/57etvd/0/ and for pointing out this data was available. I missed the deadline to submit to TAIC, but at my last look, the data is still available for those who want to try their hand at processing.

My Processing
Startools: Background extraction, development stretch, HDR, deconvolution, and color balance.
Photoshop: Star extraction (StarXterminator) to create starless and galaxy only images, APF-R (Multiscale detail enhancement) of starless image, stars added back in with linear dodge, final color tweak, background level setting, and noise reduction with NoiseXterminator.
