Description

The name for this set of galaxies derives from the Russian astrophysicist Benjamin E. Markarian, who wrote in 1961 the paper "Physical Chain of Galaxies in the Virgo Cluster and its Dynamic Instability". The Markarian chain is located in the direction of the constellations of Virgo and Coma de Berenices. Two of its members were discovered by Messier in 1781 (M84 and M86) and the rest are known from Dreyers' catalog numbers, New General Catalog (NCG 4435, 4438, 4458, 4461, 4473 and 4477). The last two galaxies are not in the field covered by the image.

The elliptical galaxies M84 and M86, with magnitudes of 9.1 and 8.9, respectively, are the brightest galaxies. Some condensations can be seen near the M86, and are probably globular clusters from this galaxy. These galaxies are 60 million light years away.

The galaxies NGC 4435 and 4438, known by the designation "The eyes" are found in the center of the chain. NGC 4435 is 5 'north-northwest of NGC 4438, which shows signs of distortion in its symmetry due to the pair's gravitational interaction. Observations with the Chandra X-ray Observatory indicate that this galactic pair collided at high speed about 100 million years ago. This collision distorted NGC 4438, which ejected much of the high temperature gas that had previously belonged to NGC 4435. Despite the very small opening of the used telescope (3 "), the image shows a flow of gas or stars clearly outside the nucleus galactic of NGC 4438.
