Description

M33 Triangulum Galaxy

The Triangulum Galaxy is a close neighbor to our own Milky Way, only 3 million light-years away.  It is the third largest galaxy in our local group, behind Andromeda and the Milky Way.  It is a loosely defined spiral, noted for massive regions of ionized hydrogen gas clouds that drive star formation.  Some of the largest stellar nurseries ever observed are in Triangulum.  Those sites see the formation of massive, super hot, and short lived stars with many burning out in millions of years compared to billions of years for typical stars like our own.  The red glow seen in these regions is emitted by ionized hydrogen energized by the intense ultraviolet radiation given off by the massive stars produced here.

Triangulum gets it's M33 designation from being the 33rd object cataloged by Charles Messier in 1764.  He was looking for comets, and when he found fuzzy patches of light that didn't move, he noted their position and description so as not to waste time on them in future surveys of the sky.  The irony being that Charles Messier built a list of things to ignore but his list is now known for the best things backyard astronomers can look at.
