Description

A very rewarding object in binoculars, NGC2168 was discovered in 1745 by Philippe Loys de Chéseaux and  Charles Messier added the object in his famous catalog with the entry number 35 in 1764.   This small patch of stars can easily be found in the constellation Gemini (the Twins) near the feet of Castor, between stars Eta and 1 Geminorum (visible in this photo).   At a distance of 2,700 light years, M35 is visible as a mottled, misty patch to the naked eye under the relatively dark skies where I live.    The open cluster also contains several yellow and orange giant stars of late G and early K type that shine with a total magnitude of 5.1.   This image was taken during a full moon.

NGC 2158, a more compact open star cluster, is visible immediately below M35.
