I set out on this venture to shoot more time on a solo project than I ever have before. The NA Nebula is a popularly imaged nebula, but not very often do you see so much time imaged through all SHO filters. The goal was to use SHO as luminance. Often SHO is combined to get a color image, and then the more detailed and better SNR Ha image is used as luminance. I have noticed in the past that some splotchiness of color would result as there were details in the Sii and Oiii that were pulling through as color, but were not as strong in the Ha image. Therefore, when Ha would be applied as lum, it would end up darkening those areas and leaving minimal detail. It's a subtle thing for most applications, and Ha as lum is often a good approach when you do not have adequate SNR in Oiii or Sii.

So.. let's fix that SNR issue and shoot a lot more Sii and Oiii so we can use them confidently in the luminance! That as my reasoning, anyways. So, here we are. April-August to shoot this thing due to terrible wildfire smoke and hazy nights. I think the patience and effort paid off. I think the RGB stars came out great as well!

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
