Description

Messier 109 (also known as NGC 3992) is a barred spiral galaxy exhibiting a weak inner ring structure around the central bar approximately =nowrap67.2 ± 23 million light-years  away in the northern constellation Ursa Major. There is a quite complicated story about its discovery as it seems that the first one to mention it was french astronomer Pierre Méchain.

Of course with a 100 f/5.8 refractor you cannot produce in 3h15 an APOD . However the main structures become visible and I find the wide fields quite nice. Not so nice were all the satellite trails in the first pictures. I suppose that all of us face this experience. It is almost impossible to shoot at the beginning of the evening, some subs had more than 10 trails, often parallel, not easy to get rid of them during processing without scarifying signal, I lost 8 Luminance subs = 32 min . Things will get worse in the upcoming years and I fear that wide field pictures in summer will become very difficult if not impossible when the sun is low under the horizon.
All the best, Andreas
