Description

Slightly bigger than our own Milky Way, the Sombrero Galaxy (M104, NGC 4594) is a giant elliptical galaxy that stretches nearly 100,000 light-years across that sits at the border of the constellations  Virgo and Corvus, approximately 31 million light-years (9.5megaparsecs) from Earth.    From SW Ohio and 39 degrees latitude, Dec -11.3 finds M104 quite low in the southern sky, and in our yard, barely clears the tree line.  It's apparent size of 9x4' also makes it a small target for the Esprit 100, though the wide angle view in Version A shows just how isolated the galaxy is from other prominent DSOs.    Located south of the Virgo supercluster,  it had been thought to be part of the Virgo II Groups,  although more recent studies suggest it may exist in isolation or only including its extremely small (and not seen in this image) companion galaxy UGCA 287 (PGC 41743); UGCA is from the Uppsala General Catalogue Addendum that includes small northern galaxies first published in 1973.
