Description

This mosaic shows the Milky Way from the constellation of Cygnus on the left to Sagittarius on the right. The colors in this image come from using H-alpha, SII and OIII filters and then combining the data using the 'Hubble palette'. There are many well known nebulae visible if you look at the high resolution image (link below). Some of the most significant are North America, Pelican, Butterfly, Crescent, Veil, Tulip, Eagle, Swan, Lagoon. The majority of this mosaic was comprised of 27 separate images taken with a 135mm camera lens with a total light collection time of 110 hours. However, there are also many images embedded within this mosaic taken with a Takahashi FSQ106 refractor with a focal length of 530mm to give crisper detail of the main nebulae. These images have 400 hours of light collected making the total imaging time 510 hours. You can find a higher resolution image at the link below the image.
