Description

NGC 3718 is a spiral galaxy whose warped shape earned it a mention, as Arp 214, in Halton Arp's "Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies". It sits at about 48 million light years from us in the direction of the bowl of the Big Dipper. Also visible in the image is NGC 3729, another spiral galaxy whose gravitational interaction is probably responsible for the warping of NGC 3718, and the compact galaxy cluster Hickson 56.
