Description

Happy New Year everyone and clear skies in 2023!

NGC 1360 (aka Robin's Egg Nebula) is a planetary nebula situated in Fornax. The central star is actually a binary system (not resolved on this image) and according to Wikipedia this was only confirmed in 2017, so the white dwarf must be difficult to observe. This distance was measured between 1140 l.y. to 1790 l.y.

I find this object very unusual and interesting, given the fuzzy predominance of the OIII clouds and emission. It was shot with the 1m RC from Chilescope. It's a tough object to process and reveal its inner structure while keeping its glowing globular shape. No deconvolution or AI sharpening was used (the nebular structures are extended so the effect was minimal, except for the red Ha structure). I used  a differential stretch for the stars without any reduction. This is a RGB composition, HOO enhanced, the two palettes are very similar and the OIII signal largely predominates.
