Description

Planetary nebula Abell 72 (PK 059+18.1) is located in Delphinus.  It is both interesting due to it's fine network of filamentary structure and somewhat dull due to emissions that are almost entirely in the O3, hence the distinct teal color. It is about 5750 light years from earth and appx. 2 light years across, occupying about 3 arc minutes on it's longest axis.

One of the more interesting and challenging aspects of imaging Abell 72 is due to the presence of several distant galaxies in the image, which are often missed or rendered almost invisible due to the large difference in brightness between these and the nebula. Most notable is PGC 65491, which is very close to line of sight with Abell 72. I did my best to display these.

Data was acquired over  14 nights between August 23rd and November 5th,  2023 from Skiesaway Observatory.
