Description

There is a lot to be seen in the Heart and Soul nebulae. I imaged this area of the sky last year and hoped to capture the whole region in a 2x1 mosaic. However the active region is bigger and my efforts were with limited success. This year I saw several consecutive clear nights in the forecast for October and decided to revisit the Heart and Soul nebulae but this time with a proper 2x2 mosaic.

So in total I dedicated 4 nights to this project and hoped to be able to add the data from the additional two nights from October last year. Imaging was smooth as there were some clouds only in my last imaging night.
Stitching the data turned out to be difficult. Merging the four panels from Y2022 was the easy part. I did it with the PhotometricMosaic script in PI which performs flawlessly for this task. The difficult part for me was adding the two panels from Y2021 as they span across the center of the mosaic and the PhotometricMosaic script can not handle such tasks. So I turned to the Gradient Merge Mosaic process in PI. Here the additional panels need a lot of trimming of border stars which if not managed properly can create a lot of nasty gradients. At the end after a lot of trial and error I managed to make a seamless mosaic from all of my data from Y2021 and Y2022.

Unfortunately my wife got injured in the end of October and currently most of my time is dedicated to helping her and my kid and taking care of the home responsibilities. That's why it took me a while to process the data from October but today I finally managed to do it and upload it.

I love this region of the sky. It is full of interesting clouds, shapes and colors.

CS,
Ivan
