Description

There are several galaxies visible in the Markarian's Chain area.  Counting the faintest ones I could make out, I can find 81.

It was a bit difficult to find in the sky with just my camera.  Keeping everything in focus throughout the night was also a challenge.  The stars are so dim in this area that the bahtinov mask wouldn't give me any lines to focus.  I think I've reached the limitations of my lens.  I can't make the stars any sharper and the vignetting makes things very difficult, even after calibration frames.  This was also the darkest and clearest night I'll ever get out at Canyon Lake.  I drove out to Enchanted Rock TX the same night while the camera was taking the last of its pictures, and the light pollution differences is remarkable.  It's a pretty far drive and I would have to schedule reservations at the state park in advance, so making it out there on a clear night around work and family activities will be a challenge to say the least.

This was my first time using Darktable and I'm hooked.  It has a lot of tools to help stretch the dark part of the image to see the galaxies, fix the heavy green tint, and reverse the vignetting.  Strangely, the vignetting is very hard to fix because each color is vignetting at different diameters, so it takes a long time to fine tune each color so I don't get these vignette rings in different tints.  Darktable also gives me a lot finer control over each setting which is very helpful.  I certainly need to learn more of the tools in this program and a lot more practice.

Overall I had a good night.  Now that it's Spring, I need to find better targets in this part of the sky.  We only get Orion in the beginning of the night, so I'm looking for a another bright novice target that is visible through the whole night.  Please comment if you have any suggestions.

Title: Fixed Color and Vignette

Description: I'm still learning the tools in DarkTable. I just found that the best way to fix the vignetting is with the "Lens Correction" tool. After choosing my lens from the list, I dialed in my f-stop and focal length, and it got me 90% of the way there. I'm probably going to revisit my previous pictures and try some of these new techniques.
