Description

NGC 1499 "The California Nebula"

NGC 1499 also known as "The California Nebula" is located in the constellation Perseus . It is a huge emission nebula glowing from the radiation of the bright star Zeta Persei to the lower left in this image . At least that is what is currently thought by many . Located approx. 1000 light years away it is a very faint glow in very dark skies thru binnoculars and may be glimpsed by the unaided eye from such a sight though it is very diffused . This image was taken with a Celestron Edge HD 11" telescope on a CGEM DX mount using a Hyperstar lll lens for an effective f-ratio of F2 . Ten - 5 mnute exposures were taken using an Sbig ST8300C one shot color camera guided by an Orion autoguider thru an 80mm short tube refractor piggybacked on the main scope . Nebulosity 3 was used to acquire and process including dark frame removal . Post processing and resizing was done using AA 4.0 . This image was taken on September 27 -2014 from Colchester ,Vt .
