Description

Lunar mosaic of 22 tiles.

Each tile is a stack of best 50% from 10 subs ISO800 1/400s

Nikon D7100, Celestron C9.25, 2.5xBarlow.

Seeing not very steady as Moon quite low and barely dark.

(bit of a hurry before clouds rolled in).

Thought I'd covered every inch... plainly not

After trying numerous approaches settled for shrinking down the subs from 6000x4000 raw to 2200x1400 16bit tif so that AS!2 would handle them. Gave up on Registax altogether - its rather shocking memory handling and 32bit app mean it doesn't work well (if at all) with anything other than small jpgs and compressed AVIs. If original subs were sharper might have persevered with PIPP

and PixInsight for align and stack. Obviously shrinking the subs too much defeats the point of making a mosaic if you just end up with something you could have shot in one frame.

In hindsight I'd probably have got better results shooting small HD videos on camera and using PIPP to order and align the subs.

Mosaic formed in Microsoft ICE and final process in PixInsight.
