M53 and NGC5053 : The most northern galactic Globulars in Coma Berenices

When you look at M53 and NGC5053, you look far away at 60000 light-years from the Sun, almost perpendicular to the Milky Way plane (80° high). These two globular clusters are among the farthest known. Just Imagine the beautiful point of view you would have on the Milky Way !!

The first one, M53 is quite rich and dense in stars. Its diameter is around 250 light-years, which could be compared to the great Globular Cluster in Hercules : 22000 ly far and a diameter of 160 light years. It's magnitude is around 8.50. "From the blaze at the centre, it is evidently a highly compressed ball of stars, whose law of aggregation into so dense and compact a mass, is utterly hidden from our imperfect senses" (Smyth / 1835) . The globular cluster is a bit blue : the heavier stars have segregated towards the center, where mergers occur and they form a new population of bluer stars known as blue stragglers.

The second one, just 1° besides, is almost at the same distance and gather a fewer number of stars : The cluster shines at a visual brightness of about 9.5 magnitudes, but star's one is greater than 14th.

This image shows stars up to 18.5 Magnitude. A sun-like star should be a bit fainter (around Mag 20).

This image has been taken 35 kilometers from Paris with a 80 mm refractor (F/D = 4.8) and ST8XME camera (SQM = 19). Exposure time is 2h15. Processed with IRIS & PS software.
