Description

This galaxy has an incredible outflow of gas from its core -- an active starburst region caused by its gravitational interactions with nearby M81. It's best seen in hydrogen-alpha light. I wanted to see how the Antlia Triband RGB Ultra would do on this region, since it does a good job of passing red -- and while it's not as much as a pure H-alpha filter would get, it's a good bit and I'm quite pleased!

M82 is located about 12 million lightyears away behind the constellation Ursa Major, off the end of the cup of the Big Dipper. We are seeing it edge-on, and it's quite a fascinating galaxy with all kinds of disruption going on from gravitational interactions with M81. At 40,800 lightyears across -- less than half of our own galaxy -- it's five times more luminous, and the central core is one hundred times more luminous!
