Description

RCW 35/Gum 18 isn't a single nebula but an HII region, which is a vast cloud of ionized hydrogen gas (red region) where new stars are born. It is located in the constellation Vela (the Sails) and adjacent to the Spiral Flame which I imaged recently. It is ionized by a group of hot, young stars, including the O7.5V star CD-43 4690 and three B-class stars. The energy from these stars excites the hydrogen gas in the nebula, causing it to glow red.
