Description

The "Leo Trio" - There is evidence of galactic wreckage in this triplet of spiral galaxies: NGC3628, M66 and M65 (clockwise from the top of the image).  The warped disk and faint tidal stream trailing to the right of NGC3628 - nicknamed the Hamburger for obvious reasons - was caused by a likely collision with M65 and M66, which has puffy spiral arms to show for it.  This celestial drama plays out 35 million light years distant.  Close observation of the scene reveals many additional more distant galaxies as well.

Equipment and processing used: Celestron RASA-11 telescope with ZWO ASI294 MC Pro one shot color camera riding on an iOptron CEM120-EC2 mount.  N.I.N.A./PHD2 used for image acquisition.  95 individual five minute exposures (7.9 hours of data), captured on the evenings of May 16-19, 2023 from Mariposa, Ca.   Processed using PixInsight.

This image was a personal challenge for me, particularly dealing with the very bright 7th magnitude star, HD 98388.  This required combining two star images at different stretch levels, and 'stamping out' the residual halo in the starless image before recombining with PixelMath.
