I'm pleased with how this one came out

7 hours of imaging in a bortle 3 sky seems to be about right to capture dark nebulosity.

For PixInsight users: I had problems with the EZdenoise script on this one because the standard setting resulted in posterization of the dark nebulae. I reduce MMT settings to 0.5 for every layer, plus reduced the TGV iterations from 1500 to 750.

Wikipedia:The Iris Nebula (also known as NGC 7023 and Caldwell 4) is a bright reflection nebula in the constellation Cepheus. The designation NGC 7023 refers to the open cluster within the larger reflection nebula designated LBN 487.

The nebula, which shines at magnitude +6.8, is illuminated by a magnitude +7.4 star designated HD 200775.[1] It is located near the Mira-type variable star T Cephei, and near the bright magnitude +3.23 variable star Beta Cephei (Alfirk). It lies 1,300 light-years away and is six light-years across.[2]

Title: More data, revised processing

Description: I added data from the Iris and Ghost Nebula capture to see what twice as much data would bring to the image. I also changed my processing in the linear stage to reduce the noise reduction, which I believe caused some degradation of the dark nebulosity. Lastly, I changed the hue of the image to be less red.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status.
