Description

Messier 102, the Spindle Galaxy!
M102 is a lenticular galaxy that lies 50 million lightyears behind the northern constellation Draco. This galaxy is almost exactly edge-on to our point of view. The prominent dust lane here is actually unusual for lenticular galaxies, where dust is usually found only near the nucleus, and usually follows the shape of the bulge. There's a chance that it's actually a spiral galaxy and not lenticular after all, but it's hard to tell from our vantage point. Lenticular galaxies are in between elliptical and spiral galaxies in the way that galaxies are classified by their morphology.  Lenticulars are usually aging galaxies with very little star formation, meaning that most of their stars are getting on in years, similar to elliptical galaxies.
