Description

The Great Orion Nebula (M42). I grew impatient while imaging a dim planetary nebula, so I took a spin by the Orion Nebula to get a quick win.  It's such a bright and beautiful target, I knew I could capture enough data for a nice image in a matter of minutes rather than a matter of hours--a luxury in this hobby.  This image reflects about 55 minutes of dual-narrowband data under Bortle 8 skies.  It would surely benefit from more integration, but I like it as it is. It's surely strides ahead of my first M42 (my first DSO image), even though that image managed to preserve the Trapezium stars that are lost in the core's glow here!

Description: I tried to improve the processing by emulating some of DSO Imager's masking techniques. I think I did a good job of toning down the core and heightening the detail throughout the nebula, but I was unable to reveal the stars in the Trapezium. When I looked at the underlying data, I realized that even my 10-second exposures blew out the core enough to obscure them! The perils of imaging at f/2!
