Description

IC 342 is a spiral galaxy in Camelopardalis, partially obscured by dust from the Milky Way near the galactic equator. Estimates of the distance from here range from about 7 MLY to 11 MLY and are confounded by the Milky Way's galactic dust in the light path from the galaxy. With a magnitude of about 8.4, it appears fainter than expected because it is spread out over a large area, being one of the larger spiral galaxies after M31 (Andromeda) and M33 (Triangulum). Without the dust from the Milky Way, IC 342 would likely be one of the brighter galaxies in our night's sky.
