Description

The Triangulum Galaxy is a spiral galaxy approximately 3 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Triangulum. It is cataloged as Messier 33 or NGC 598, and is sometimes informally referred to as the Pinwheel Galaxy, a nickname it shares with Messier 101. The Triangulum Galaxy is the third-largest member of the Local Group of galaxies, which includes the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy and about 44 other smaller galaxies. It is one of the most distant permanent objects that can be viewed with the naked eye.

The galaxy is the smallest spiral galaxy in the Local Group and it is believed to be a satellite of the Andromeda Galaxy due to their interactions, velocities and proximity to one another in the night sky. It also has an H-II nucleus.[Source Wikipedia]

The image was captured with my TMB80ss refractor, mounted on the venerable Meade 12"LX200. The camera used was the Canon 450D xsi, imaging at F6.3 (i.e. 504mm FL). Imaging subs were taken at 18 to 20C, and 3 minutes each.

Image --

47 subs (2.35 hr) on Nov 17th.

17 subs (0.85 hr) on Nov 18th.

Processing was done with PixInsight, following reasonably good practice. North is up, and this is a medium crop due to star distortion in the corners. I had hoped to be able to try my Starizona SCT Corrector with this setup. But the image would not come to focus with the draw-tube all the way in. Also, I have no way to automate the TMB80ss focuser, so not a lot of attention was paid to keeping everything absolutely sharp.

M33 has proven a difficult target. A Previous image done with the Canon and the LX200 back in November 2013 was OK, but nothing to write home about. I expected more snap with this wide field version, but can't say I'm real pleased.

Meanwhile, my ATIK 383L+mono is in the U.K. being reconditioned, so I'm hoping for better things when it gets back.
