Took quite a while reconfiguring the ST80 so I could make focus with the focal reducer in place. This was with a spacer on the reducer so it is close to 0.5x. Ended up with a configuration that allows easy rotation of the camera to the optimum angle, needed because M31 fills my whole field of view. Chiller was working and temperatures ran from +2 to -2 °C. Had a lot of trouble with tracking; I think the gear is probably loose on the shaft. Did a meridian flip but then tracking failed. Fought a lot with the processing. I’ve got some kind of weird rotational blurring along the left side of the image; I don’t know what causes that. This still isn’t where I’m hoping to get it.

Filter: None

Mount: CG-5 (Synta motors)

Guiding: AT8IN+High Point Scientific coma corrector + DSI Ic + PHD 1.13.6

Camera: DSI IIc (1.5 A, 7.0 V, T = -2 to 3 °C)

Acquisition: Nebulosity 3.1.2, high dither

Exposure: 22/60 x 300 s

Stacking: Neb 3, darks & flats, bias included, normalize first, trans+rot align, 1.25 SD stack

Processing: Digital development with 1 level sharpening, power stretch, Keller stretch, saturation boost,; CS6 high pass filter/layer mask to enhance dust lanes, Astronomy Tools local contrast and star color enhance, flatten, a little levels and curves.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
