Description

M1 is thought to correspond to SN 1054, a likely supernova that was apparently observed on July 4, 1054. Documents from the period suggest that the supernova visibly persisted for about two years. The dispersion of material from the supernova appears as the Crab Nebula in modern day skies and is thought to be about 6500 light years away. It is fascinating to think that the star that led to this contemporary celestial object exploded somewhere around 7461 years ago such that light first reached Earth ~961 years ago and has been dispersing since, forming the beautiful structure we today know as the Crab Nebula.
