Description

The Flame Nebula is an emission nebula in which hydrogen gas has been energised by the UV light from the nearby star Alnitak, which is very obvious in this image. Unlike emission nebulae in which hydrogen emits Lyman alpha radiation by the energy transitions of energised electrons, this nebula, which is clearly not deep red like the H-alpha emission nebulae, emits light generated by the recombination of ionised hydrogen and electrons.

Further dust and gas obscures the central portion the nebula, producing the characteristic dark lanes.

The Flame Nebula is about 1000 light years from Earth.

Description: This has been fully reprocessed from the same data, following the workflow in Inside Pixinsight. I rejected a further 5 images compared to the original processing. The scope was out of collimation (as my notebooks from the time revealed) and this has damaged some star shapes.
