This is a Swedish - Canadian collaboration. When I saw fellow Astrobinner Francois Theriault's Ha image of the Horsehead nebula here on Astrobin I realized it would give a huge boost to the contrast and detail of that part of my more widefield image covering both the Horsehead and Flame Nebula. I suggested a collaboration by merging our data, and Francois replied enthusiastically, so here is the result. I do not think it is far behind the APOD version published on the NASA web site:

Here on my Astrobin you can see what it looked like before Francois' Ha data (I also did some star shrinking to match the two), and on Francois' Astrobin you find his great Ha image of the Horsehead.
Göran's data was collected by an ES 127ED apo refractor with a TS 0.79 reducer giving at FL 750mm and a Canon 60Da (10 x 300" at ISO 1600).
Francois' data was collected by an Antares 200mm Newtonean (FL 1000 mm) and a SBIG ST8300M (Baader Ha filter, 11 x 300").
