The Galaxy season is starting, so I pointed out my new C11 scope to a very interesting subject. The Cigar Galaxy (Messier M82 or M82) is a member of the M81 (Bode Galaxy) Group, that's one of the nearest to the Milky Way and the Local Group. It's visible in the Ursa Major constellation at about 11.5 million light-years away from us.M82 is an active galaxy included in the starburst galaxy type. The active galaxies host in their center a very compact region (AGN – active galactic nucleus) and sometimes emit long jets of matter. A starburst galaxy has a violent stellar-formation process due to the gravitational relationship with another galaxy (M81 in this case). The unique bipolar outflow (or superwind) is concentrated in some starburst regions and is fueled by energy released by supernovae within these regions.M82 is about 37.500 l.y. wide; M81 is 72.000 l.y.Probably M81 and M82 collided with each other about 250 million years ago.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
