Description

Tested out the Vaonis Vespera robotic observation station on Orion. Took 6 mosaic panels with various exposure times for each panel. It was a total integration time of about 2 hours and 30 minutes, although a pretty good visual view of Orion was imaged in between 10 and 30 seconds. It was a little tricky to process because the mosaic panels rotate a bit more with an Alt Azimuth mount, so the final image did not use all the material in the six images. I think a little luck was involved. Please excuse any imperfections as I did not spend much time on processing, and used JPEGs instead of TIFFs.  I am happy with the out of the box usability of this system. It will be a wonderful grab it and go kit. The Vespera is built around a 200mm 2 inch lens that packs quite a punch for it’s small size. It operates on digital devices like Iphones and Ipads with the novice astro imager in mind. It is portable enough to be carried in a backpack. Think of it as a Polaroid camera for astrophotography fans. PS, I actually took 15 panels, but didn't use them all. The image was taken on 1/19/2022, the day after a full moon. Hopefully Vaonis will offer automated mosaic software options. Processed with Pixinsight and Photoshop.

I have always thought the Questar was pretty cool.  Imagine how much you would have to spend to make a Questar Observatory in a Box do what this does!
