Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a small multihued reflection nebula located in a dusty region of the Orion constellation at a declination of -6 degrees.  It spans only 1 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  I like the texture of the nebula, appearing to have arc-like patterns extending from lower left to upper right.

This object is located almost 2 degrees southeast of the Orion Nebula.  The nebula surrounds the 10.6 magnitude source star BD 06 1287.   The distance to the source star (and therefore the nebula) is not known.

Sidney van den Bergh published his vdB catalog of reflection nebulae in 1966. It was later expanded by one for a total of 159. The collection encompassed all reflection nebulosity visible on the Palomar Sky Survey north of -33 degrees latitude.  My Astrobin vdB Collection, which is about 85% complete, is here.
