Description

Pickering's Triangle is a part of the much larger Veil Nebula which in all spans about 3 degree in diameter, much larger than this field of view is able to display. It is the equivalent of 3 times the apparent diameter of the Moon. This is a supernova remnant from a massive explosion that occurred 10 to 20 thousand years ago. The exploding star was roughly 20 times the mass of the Sun. The teal filaments are ionized oxygen gas, while the red are ionized hydrogen and sulfur gases. The undulating filaments average about 4 billion miles thick, or roughly the distance from Earth to Pluto. The Veil Nebula lies about 2400 light years away.

Photographed from Taxahaw, SC using R, G, B, Ha and OIII filters on a ZWO ASI1600 monochrome camera using an Explore Scientific 127mm APO refractor with an EFL of 523mm.
