Description

Pelican Nebula

Taken on August 2nd and 3rd, in the beautiful sandhills of Nebraska Star Party 2021.

This is my first LRGB image (filters & mono camera), so processing is a somewhat different flow.

Description: This is the first stacking attempt, cropped, color balance, and stretched. Clearly the colors aren't right, and the stars are way oversaturated.

Description: This was my second attempt. I corrected some mistakes in the assembly process, namely I cropped the images before combining, and I normalized levels (ref: Kayron Mercueca's tutorial here: https://www.lightvortexastronomy.com/tutorial-preparing-monochrome-images-for-colour-combination-and-further-post-processing.html)

This looked much much better after combining the channels, and a modest stretch helped it pop. There's some weird green artifacts in the brightest stars that I need to target next.

Description: Attempt #3. This time I tried out Cuiv's processing workflow (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GR3j1GXDRr4). I spent a bit more time on the image this round, with things like EZ denoise and decon, although I couldn't get photometric color calibration to run correctly, so the colors are a bit out of whack. The final product still had some green artifacts, thankfully not as a sharp as before. I inspected my original data, and the green channel stars are too eccentric, which I think is the root of my problem. More data is better, but in this case, SCNR removed the green and produced an image I'm reasonably happy with. I'll probably stop here until I get the chance to capture more subs that hopefully clean up the eccentricity.
