Description

This magnificent open cluser lies in the constellation Crux, commonly named Southern Cross.
The Jewel Box
, NGC 4755, was discovered by Abbé Nicolas Louis de Lacaille between 1751 and 1753.
The nickname Jewel Box has its origin in John Herschel's description of the cluster, "which though neither a large nor a rich one, is yet an extremely brilliant and beautiful object when viewed through an instrument of sufficient aperture to show distinctly the very different colour of its constituent stars, which give it the effect of a superb piece of fancy jewellery."
The cluster is around 10 million years old and contains 281 known stars.
